Soy in Horseradish

Hello! Welcome to Beyond Soy!

Did you know that horseradish can often contain soy? We didn’t until we tried to buy it!

We most often find Horseradish included in other items that may or may not contain soy. Things like cocktail sauce might contain soy, but they also can frequently be soy-free. As a result, we always check the ingredients on products like this because some brands actually are soy-free.

One day, Ashley and I decided to make our own cocktail sauce because it is super easy to make and we could customize the spiciness. When we found the horseradish in the grocery store, we were shocked! All of the brands contained soybean oil. We couldn’t find just plain, soy-free horseradish. Much like tuna, the problem here wasn’t the product itself, but rather how it was prepared and packaged. This process introduced soy and it meant that we were struggling to find a product that we thought would be easily soy-free.

Eventually we found a (more expensive) imported horseradish brand from Germany that is soy-free. But, we’ve learned our lesson that not all products are as simple as they may seem. This example illustrates that you should always check the ingredients because you never know where soy will appear.
