Hello! Welcome to Beyond Soy!
While allergen menus can be really helpful when eating out, they tend to be generally negative documents. They list the things that you can’t eat due to a certain ingredient. This slight negativity doesn’t sound like a big deal, but it can be frustrating to constantly be questioning if the thing on the menu that you want to eat has soy. A few months ago, Ashley and I discovered the best allergen menu we’ve ever seen: the Cracker Barrel Allergen Menu!
Cracker Barrel takes a different approach to their allergen menu. They have a page devoted to each allergen that lists the menu items that you can eat! Essentially, they give each allergen its own mini-menu. This positive tilt toward ordering (by looking at what you can eat, not what you can’t eat) makes a huge difference!
Additionally, this allergen menu is very clear about substitutions and modifications to make dishes allergen-free. For example, it identifies that the Yogurt n’ Granola can be a soy-free dish if ordered without Granola. Other allergen menus would merely identify Yogurt n’ Granola as containing soy and leave the reader to figure out what part of the dish contains the soy. This simple step of providing just a bit more information is very beneficial to removing some of the uncertainty of eating out.
The Cracker Barrel allergen menu is also very explicit about the use of soybean oil. It clearly indicates what soy-free menu items use soybean oil so we aren’t left wondering what position the allergen menu takes with regards to soybean oil.
The Cracker Barrel allergen menu demonstrates that eating soy-free at a restaurant doesn’t need to be difficult. Their allergen menu is easy to understand, comprehensive, and frames eating at Cracker Barrel as a positive experience. We hope to see this type of menu appear at other restaurants, but for now, we love the certainty that the Cracker Barrel menu provides!
