Rice Krispy Treats: Soy-Free!

Dessert can be one of the most challenging areas to eat soy free. Since so many dessert ingredients contain soy (think: chocolate and soybean oil), it can be very difficult to know what kind of dessert to pick, or what to suggest as a guaranteed soy-free dessert without a list of disclaimers or additional requirements. It can feel like a huge burden to suggest chocolate chip cookies, but then add the disclaimer to make sure to not only make them from scratch, but also use real butter, Nestle dark chocolate morsels, and canola oil instead of vegetable oil.

As we recommend in other areas of eating (e.g., carrying a backup snack, and eating at a fast food restaurant), it is a good idea to have one or two dessert ideas in your back pocket that you can be confident are soy-free. These ideas can come in handy as both easy ideas to make (or suggest your friends or family make), or desserts that you feel confident are soy-free when made by people you don’t know. 



One of our favorite, and most dependable, go-to dessert options are Rice Krispy treats. Rice Krispy treats, when made using the recipe on the box, are soy-free! (you do need to make sure to use real butter, not margarine). Since they are so common, so easy to make, and so easy to make soy-free, we frequently suggest Rice Krispy treats as dessert options, and we often bring them to potluck-type situations.

A word of caution, however: store-bought, pre-packaged Rice Krispy treats are not soy-free. They use margarine in lieu of real butter. To avoid this, just make sure that your Rice Krispy treats are freshly made.
