Staying Soy-Free While Moving

Hello! Welcome to Beyond Soy!

Moving, whether across town or across the country, is hard enough as it is, but what about when you have a food intolerance too? Let’s consider how to eat soy-free during three stages of moving: packing up, in transit, and settling in.

Packing Up: Preparing to move can be a very chaotic time. This process involves getting all of your belongings into boxes, ensuring that everything is ready to be transferred, managing utilities, and more, all on top of your normal daily tasks. During this period, many people choose to eat out more frequently. Packing up the kitchen makes it harder to cook at home, and saving time by not preparing food can add extra hours to a packed day. This is a great strategy! Think ahead and identify some soy-free food options that you can choose during this packing period. By not having to make decisions about soy-free food in the moment, you can eliminate stress, reduce mistakes, and generally make it just a bit easier during this hectic time.

In Transit: Food in transit can be handled just like a soy-free road trip. While this doesn’t necessarily apply to across-town moves, make sure you have a plan for food while driving to your new destination. This could be as simple as knowing some common soy-free foods that you like to pick up at a convenience store. If you are moving across the country, find some favorite restaurants along your route that you can look forward to! Glance at menus in advance so you can be confident in your food choices and you won’t need to worry about food while on the move.

Settling In: Once you get to your destination, the stress doesn’t quite end. Living in a new place, either in the same city or across the country, makes for a different food scene. You probably have a new grocery store, with a slightly different layout or different soy-free offerings. The restaurant scene is also different. The key here is to take your time. Slowly get to know your local restaurants. Do research on menus in advance and play it safe to start. Find some soy-free options that you like! The same goes for the grocery store: take some time to walk through the aisles. Make sure to find your staple soy-free foods, but also don’t hesitate to explore new options that you may find. Settling in with food will make you more comfortable and allow you to quickly enjoy your new neighborhood.

Moving is a very stressful time, but food doesn’t need to add to it! Plan ahead to ensure you stay soy-free throughout the entire process and keep it as stress-free as possible!
