Some Bad News About Goldfish

Hello! Welcome to Beyond Soy!

When we first started avoiding soy, Goldfish were something that had to say goodbye to. They used soybean oil so we stopped buying them and stopped eating them. After a year or two we happened to check the ingredients and we found that to our surprise the ingredients had changed and they were now soy-free. Hooray! From this point onward Goldfish became one of our staple snacks. They were easy to keep on hand, not to mention delicious, and they also were quite common in places where it is challenging to find soy-free food. At places like convenience stores, goldfish were an easy option to grab to ensure we had a soy-free snack.

Alas, all good things must come to an end. We recently went to purchase Goldfish again and found that they once more contain soybean oil. When this type of thing happens the first thing we do is to check all the types of packages as it’s possible that the switch was made only in one or two production locations. We checked the big boxes of goldfish, individual bags, and the regular paper-bags and also looked at all the different flavors, but all goldfish now contain soy.

It’s a bummer to not be able to eat Goldfish anymore, and a very good reminder that ingredients do change from time to time. Thankfully, we can still find soy-free Annie’s Cheddar Bunnies and we’ve even talked about trying to bake copycat goldfish at home. Have you checked the ingredients of common things you buy recently?
